Hamburger SV has posted record financial results for its first season back in the Bundesliga. The club generated revenue of €182.1 million in the 2025/26 financial year, surpassing its previous record set in the 2008/09 season.
Revenue increased from €126.5 million the previous year, when HSV was in the second division, to €182.1 million. Net profit rose to €8.1 million. Notably, the equity ratio climbed from 29.9 percent to 45.5 percent, with equity now standing at €87.5 million. Financial liabilities were reduced while cash equivalents reached €50.5 million. The club's bond was repaid as scheduled in March 2026.
Almost three out of every four euros now come from outside media rights and player transfers. Commercial earning power, meaning revenue excluding transfer and broadcasting income, was €134.9 million. Five of the club's six revenue streams grew. Match operations generated the largest share at €56.3 million, followed by partnerships (€31.4 million) and merchandising (€25.3 million). The staff cost ratio fell to a healthy 36.9 percent of total income.
Board member Eric Huwer stressed the importance of responsible management. "Every promotion means higher revenue. What matters is what you do with it," Huwer said. He added: "Last year, we proved that we can manage the club responsibly from a financial perspective." Financial stability is the prerequisite for being able to act decisively in sporting terms, even during more challenging periods. The club now stands on a very stable foundation and is equipped to compete in the Bundesliga.
The strengthened financial power allows HSV to invest strategically in its sporting development. The €8 million signing of Zakaria El Ouahdi, for example, was financed from cash flow. The €7 million proceeds from the sale of Fabio Baldé were directly reinvested in the acquisition of Fábio Vieira. Also, the club plans to expand the Volksparkstadion from 57,000 to 60,000 seats, financed by the Supporters Trust.
This solid base is also significant amid a difficult start to the current season. HSV sits 16th in the table with 3 points from 4 games. Recent form shows two wins and three defeats in the last five matches. The next fixture is an away trip to 14th-placed 1899 Hoffenheim on October 10th. With 150,000 members and an average of 57,000 fans at every men's home game, HSV has a strong foundation to tackle the challenges ahead.
