Hamburger SV and head coach Merlin Polzin have agreed on a contract extension. The deal signals stability for the relegation-threatened club despite a poor start to the season.
Polzin, who led HSV to promotion to the Bundesliga in 2025, confirmed the basic agreement. His current contract runs until 2027. The new deal would extend that term by a further two years. "That we have a basic agreement is certain. We will announce it soon," said the 35-year-old. The contract is not yet signed, but they are on a very good path. "The mutual trust is very, very great," Polzin added.
The announcement comes during a difficult period for the historic club. Hamburger SV sit 16th in the Bundesliga with just three points from four games and have already conceded 13 goals. Their recent form of two wins, one draw and two defeats in the last five matches, however, shows some positive signs, including a 1-1 draw at Bayer Leverkusen. Against this backdrop, the club wants to send a clear signal of continuity with the early contract extension. Polzin is seen as the architect of the promotion and enjoys high esteem within the club.
Parallel to the coach talks, HSV was also active in the transfer market last Tuesday. The club signed players Fabio Vieira, Zakaria El Ouahdi and David Möller Wolfe. Additionally, midfielder Daniel Elfadli was loaned to Austrian club Linzer ASK until the end of the season. Elfadli joined HSV from 1. FC Magdeburg in 2024 and is under contract until 2028. Such loans to Austria are possible until Thursday at 5 p.m.
The focus is now fully on the sporting upturn. The next opportunity comes with the away match at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim on October 10th. Hoffenheim currently sit in 14th place.
