Hamburger SV have claimed their first Bundesliga win of the season. A 2-1 (0-0) victory over 1. FC Köln at the Volksparkstadion ended a run of three consecutive defeats at the start of the campaign for Merlin Polzin's side.

Coach Merlin Polzin had emphasised the need for a result beforehand. "Against 1. FC Köln, the team urgently needs its first positive experience today at the Volksparkstadion," said the 35-year-old. His team delivered the required response to secure three key points.

How the match unfolded

Goals for HSV came shortly after half-time from Nicolás Capaldo (44th minute) and Yussuf Poulsen (49th), both assisted by Albert Grønbaek. Köln's consolation from Ragnar Ache in the 90th minute arrived too late. The win lifts Hamburger SV from the bottom to 16th place in the standings, giving them three points from four matches. Their recent form shows a slight uptick with two wins from their last five competitive games.

Attention now turns to the next away fixture. On October 10th, they travel to face 14th-placed 1899 Hoffenheim. The full schedule of upcoming matches is available on the fixtures page.
