In the summer, the HSV had already brought in three new players from England: Luka Vuskovic, Albert Sambi Lokonga, and Fabio Vieira. The trio was a success and made the Hamburg team competitive in the fight for Bundesliga survival.
Why it matters
Downs embodies what Hamburg was looking for. A fast striker with depth, who is also physically present and good in the air. Downs runs over 35 km/h and is robust with his 1.92 meters.

Downs is already in Hamburg and will undergo a medical check soon. However, it is questionable whether he will be on the training pitch on Tuesday afternoon. The time might be too short.
The center-forward moved from Ingolstadt to Köln in the U17. At 19, he made his first Bundesliga appearance for FC Köln in September 2023. In total, he played 42 games for Köln before Southampton signed him.

With a strong second half, Downs wants to qualify for the US World Cup squad. The HSV has a purchase option for the striker, which should be around ten million euros. Curiously, Hamburg's loan goalkeeper Daniel Peretz moves to Southampton after two strike days. On the same day, striker Downs comes from the English second division team to HSV.
