Hamburger SV have completed a record transfer by signing Fabio Viera permanently. The 26-year-old Portuguese midfielder joins from Arsenal for a fee of around nine million euros, as reported by FAZ Sport, marking the club's largest single investment in a player for a decade. This major signing comes after a season-opening 2-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund, which leaves HSV 14th in the Bundesliga with zero points from one game.
Why is Viera so important for HSV?
Fabio Viera spent last season on loan at Hamburg and quickly became a pivotal figure. His contribution of seven goals and five assists in the Bundesliga highlights his value. Head coach Merlin Polzin emphasised the player's significance. "Fabio provided many great moments last season, he is an outstanding player and also a character who fit into the team perfectly," Polzin said. Making the move permanent was a clear objective after the club could not afford the agreed purchase option of 22 million euros. Sporting director Claus Costa travelled to London last Tuesday to finalise the deal.
How is HSV funding this transfer offensive?
The record move for Viera is part of a broader summer spending spree. In total, Hamburger SV invested approximately 30 million euros in this transfer window. This is offset by player sales revenue of around ten million euros, resulting in net spending of about 20 million. Departures included Fabio Baldé (to Strasbourg), Robert Glatzel (to Wolfsburg), and Jean-Luc Dompé (to Konyaspor). The key enabler is a solid financial foundation: according to finance board member Eric Huwer, the club is debt-free for the first time in decades and has posted a profit for four consecutive years. Expected record revenues for the 2025/26 financial year make such investments possible.
Who are the other new signings?
Alongside Viera, HSV has secured other targeted reinforcements. For the right-back position, the club signed 24-year-old Moroccan Zakaria El Ouahdi from KRC Genk for a fee of eight million euros plus add-ons. As a left-back, David Møller Wolfe was brought in on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers, bringing World Cup experience with Norway. These signings are tailored to coach Polzin's new system, which employs a 3-4-2-1 formation with two attacking wing-backs. An overview of the current squad is available on our squad page.
What's next after the season opener?
The opening defeat is no cause for panic, but HSV needs to start collecting points quickly. With zero goals scored and two conceded, they have a negative goal difference and trail league leaders Bayern Munich by three points. The next opportunity comes this Sunday, September 6, 2026, when HSV hosts FSV Mainz 05, who currently sit tenth in the table, at the Volksparkstadion. All upcoming fixtures are listed in our fixtures calendar. The team's task is now to integrate the expensive new signings quickly into the tactical setup and address the defensive issues from the first match.
